Amanda Leal
Athlete, coach, owner, competitor, mom. She runs the standard.
Amanda runs the floor standard across both locations.
Amanda grew up a competitive gymnast, and when she retired she missed the daily feeling of training so much that she followed her parents into the weight room — and it stuck. She coached gymnastics for years, then opened her own gymnastics and fitness facility because she wanted control over the two things she couldn’t fix working for someone else: the standards and the programming. She eventually sold it, realizing what she wanted wasn’t to own the building — it was to own the standard.
Box gyms intimidated her when she started, and she worked around trainers who ran everyone through the same program without listening — the opposite of what Redefine is, and the private, no-audience space is a big part of why she loves it here. Her own hardest rebuild was mental, not physical: coming back to training after her two kids, the real work was getting past the guilt of focusing on her own body again.
Who Amanda works best with
Intimidated first-timers and moms getting back to themselves. She’s been both — the person scared to walk in, and the mom fighting guilt to start again — so she knows exactly what’s going through their head.
A mom of three who homeschools finally carved out time for herself. She didn’t want to lose weight; she wanted to build muscle and feel strong instead of too thin. Rather than assume what she “should” want, Amanda listened and built around it — and the client fell in love with strength training and completely changed how she sees her own body.
What most people get wrong
Most trainers just work around pain and move on. At Redefine, Amanda says, they help people build the strength to reduce it — sometimes with approaches that look unconventional, but that work.
In Amanda’s words
“I hold the floor to a standard because I’ve done this from every seat — athlete, coach, owner, competitor, and mom. I’ll never ask anyone to do something I haven’t done myself.”
What it takes to coach at Redefine
Nobody trains clients at Redefine Fitness without passing a screening test, an in-person skill practical, and a written exam just to get hired, then testing out of a 30-day onboarding against our 100-page Training Master Guide. Every Thursday from 1-2 PM we close both gyms so the entire staff trains together, and every specialist sits annual exams on a tiered education ladder. We also created a New York State Department of Labor approved Fitness Specialist apprenticeship. Fitness is medicine, and this is what the standard behind it looks like.
