About Redefine Fitness

Built by someone
medicine gave up on

Redefine Fitness is a medical-fitness company on Long Island. Not a gym. It exists because our founder was told his injuries were permanent, and proved that wrong. Now we apply the same standard to every client we take on.

The Founder’s Story

“I’m a physician, not a magician.”

That is what one of the top orthopedic surgeons in New York told Anthony Amen in 2010. A fall on the ice during a college intramural game had left him, at 20, with five herniated discs, a severe concussion, a frozen shoulder, and chronic migraines. He was bedridden, dependent on medication, and told he would never lift his arm overhead again. The surgeon closed the chart. The message was clear: this is your life now.

It was not the first time the world had counted him out. Anthony was bullied relentlessly from elementary school through junior high. At 14, he hit a breaking point most people never talk about, and made a decision instead: if you cannot live this life, become somebody who can. No shortcut. He spent the next year rebuilding his own identity through what he calls repetitive exercise for the mind, thousands of reps of a person who did not exist yet, until he did.

So in 2010, when medicine closed his chart, Anthony already knew something the surgeon did not: the human body, like the mind, responds to work. What followed was three and a half years of grueling, self-directed rehabilitation. No protocol existed, so he built one, movement by movement, rep by rep. In 2014 he raised his hand above his head for the first time in years and broke down crying in front of his parents.

Redefine Fitness exists because of that gap: the space between what medicine manages and what the body can actually recover. Doctors manage the diagnosis. We train the comeback. Fitness is medicine, and every program we build starts there.

“It’s not about being the biggest or the fastest. It’s about redefining your best self.”Anthony Amen, Founder

Why our team is different

Trained like clinicians, not like salespeople

Most gyms hire on a weekend certification and pay per session. Redefine created a New York State Department of Labor approved Fitness Specialist apprenticeship, and holds the whole team to that standard: a three-stage hiring exam, a 30-day onboarding tested against our 100-page Training Master Guide, a tiered education ladder, and annual exams for every specialist. Every Thursday from 1-2 PM we close both gyms so the entire staff trains together. And our specialists are paid a true hourly rate with benefits for full-time staff, not per-session commissions, which is nearly unheard of in this industry. It is why your program is built, not guessed.

Questions

Frequently asked

How is Redefine Fitness different from a regular gym?

We are a medical-fitness company, not a gym. Every client starts with a movement screening and health-history intake, and every program is built one-on-one by a Fitness Specialist who passed a three-stage hiring exam and trains weekly under our education program, with methodology developed with clinical input from a board-certified Nurse Practitioner.

What qualifications does your staff have?

Our specialists pass a screening test, an in-person skill practical, and a written exam to be hired, then test out of a 30-day onboarding based on our 100-page Training Master Guide, with all-staff education every Thursday, annual exams, and a tiered education ladder. We also created a New York State Department of Labor approved Fitness Specialist apprenticeship. Leadership includes a board-certified Nurse Practitioner as Clinical Advisor and a Registered Dietitian leading nutrition.

Where is Redefine Fitness located?

Stony Brook (1113 North Country Road, Ste 4C) and Mount Sinai (271 Route 25A, Ste 1) on Long Island, New York.

Do I need to be fit to start?

No. Most of our clients come to us with an injury, a health condition, or years away from exercise. Your program is built around your movement screening and health history, which means it meets you exactly where you are.

Does Redefine Fitness provide medical care?

No. Redefine Fitness provides fitness and nutrition services, not medical diagnosis or treatment. Our programs are developed with clinical input, and we coordinate with your healthcare providers when appropriate.
