Chukwuma Eke

Former wrestler and semi-pro rugby player who rebuilt his own body twice. He teaches you to trust yours again.

About Chukwuma

Chukwuma trains athletes coming back from injury and adults rebuilding everyday strength at Mount Sinai.

Chukwuma grew up an athlete: a high school wrestler at the top of his bracket, then a semi-pro rugby player in college. Injury changed the path. A fractured talus ended his senior wrestling season, and a knee injury followed a few years later, the day he was promoted to his rugby club’s first team. What he learned from both was that recovery is a mental fight as much as a physical one: the fear of getting hurt again, the lost confidence, the work of rebuilding trust in your own body.

That experience pulled him toward exercise science and rehabilitation. Before Redefine he worked as an aide in a clinic, where he saw firsthand how many people stop believing progress is possible. He came here because the training is individualized and explained: clients learn why they are doing every movement, not just what to do.

Who Chukwuma works best with

Two groups. Younger and competitive athletes who want to return to their sport stronger, because he knows the demands of training, competing and coming back from a setback. And older adults, people preparing for or recovering from surgery, and anyone whose goal is simply to walk with less pain, keep their balance and stay independent. His favorite client is the one willing to learn, wherever they are starting from.

A win Chukwuma is proud of

His first in-home client had a total hip replacement and several other major surgeries behind her, and had stopped believing she could get better. He rebuilt her lower body strength, balance and mobility with patient, consistent programming, using the upper body strength she had built compensating for years as an asset. Her function improved to the point that the hardships that once defined her days became something she could look back on. She remains his biggest win.

What most people get wrong

They make the person fit the program instead of building the program around the person. Chukwuma’s standard is the individual in front of him: their history, their limits today, what their body can actually do. Progress is not always more weight on the bar. Sometimes it is moving without fear.

In Chukwuma’s words

“Good training creates physical change. Great training changes what someone believes is possible for themselves.”

“Injury, or the fear of it, does not have to define what you are capable of.”

What it takes to coach at Redefine

Nobody trains clients at Redefine Fitness without passing a screening test, an in-person skill practical, and a written exam just to get hired, then testing out of a 30-day onboarding against our 100-page Training Master Guide. Every Thursday from 1-2 PM we close both gyms so the entire staff trains together, and every specialist sits annual exams on a tiered education ladder. We also created a New York State Department of Labor approved Fitness Specialist apprenticeship. Fitness is medicine, and this is what the standard behind it looks like.
